Arte Público Press Advisory Board Member David E. Ruiz reads to children at Cloverleaf Elementary School in Houston, Texas to follow up on his donation of $1,000 worth of Piñata Books to the school. His contribution of $500 was matched by his employer, Bank of America.

Marina Tristán, assistant director of Arte Público Press, and Karen Locke, 8th grade Spanish/Language Arts teacher at Van Buren Middle School in Kettering, Ohio, at the National Council of Teachers of English conference, which took place in the Javits Convention Center in New York City on November 16 – 18, 2007.


Author Diane Gonzales Bertrand, 8th grade Spanish/Language Arts teacher Karen Locke, and author Ray Villareal participated on a panel entitled “Roping ‘em in: Enticing reluctant adolescent readers with culturally relevant literature” at the National Council of Teachers of English conference on November 17, 2007.

Author John Lantigua, Arte Público Press founder and Director Nicolás Kanellos , Ph.D., and Advisory Board President Geraldina Interiano Wise visit during a fundraising luncheon at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel on September 28, 2007.

The luncheon featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Edgar Award-nominee John Lantigua was a fantastic success, with attendees mesmerized by his stories of covering civil war in Central America, crossing illegally into the U.S. with Mexican immigrants, and uncovering voter fraud in Florida . The luncheon was held to help Arte Público Press continue its mission of publishing Hispanic literature in order to reform education and U.S. culture to more accurately include, value, and reflect Hispanic contributions and customs.
